Busy Bees

On the 24th September 20 students from Barnhill travelled to Kent to a farm run by Bees for Refugees, an organisation set up by Syrian refugees who are setting up beehives across West London. They are trying to preserve an endangered species – the Black British Bee.
Bees are vital for human survival – they pollinate a third of all our food.  But despite this, bees are in decline.  At the farm in Kent we met bees for the first time and found out about their incredible lives.   Each bee has 5 eyes and can recognise a human face!
Students also cleaned out the chicken coop, made frames for the beehive, chilled out in hammocks, played with Zatar the dog, and had marshmallows roasted on the campfire.
In Spring 2027 Bees for Refugees are going to bring bees to Barnhill and we’ll start our own beekeeping club with 120,000 bees.    If you love honey – watch this space!
