Sixth Formers using their language skills
Deborah Streatfield, a careers consultant at Barnhill, worked with a group of sixth formers to translate a booklet 'Baby's First 100 Days' aimed at providing straight forward advice to new mums.
The booklet was 'born' from a collaboration of consultant paediatricians at St Marys, Perinatal Psychiatrists, neonatal nurses, and midwives, and Deborah Streatfield (mum of six herself) drawing on many years of professional and personal experience and sharing practical advice that has been tried, tested and trusted during those important early days.
Sixth Form students, staff and parents were asked if they could help translate the booklet into as many community languages as possible. Sixth Form students volunteered to help and have produced translations in the following languages:
Richard – Romanian
Rajvi – Gujrati
Nikola – Polish
Maria– Hindi and Urdu
Aleena – Hindi
Ishi – Hindi
Varneet – Punjabi
Ms Calaca (teacher) – Portuguese
Ms Agalan (parent) – Tamil
The creators of the booklet expressed their sincere gratitude 'to the students, staff and parents of Barhill Community High School, who generously translated the booklet into a range of languages with many students even giving up part of their school holidays to support this work. We really appreciate your support and contribution.'
