Professor Ribbans - unravelling the answer to the question: 'Why Medicine?'

A dose of career advice and a shot of ambition!

Professor Bill Ribbans is a distinguished figure in the field of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. He has a rich background in medical education and training, having qualified from the Royal Free Hospital in London.  He has a strong commitment to education and research, lecturing nationally and internationally, and supervising PHD students.

Professor Ribbans took time out of his busy schedule to visit Barnhill on Friday 26th September and delivered an inspiring presentation on the many career pathways to which medicine can lead to selected Y11 and sixth form students considering the field.

Students were captivated by his breadth of knowledge and impressed with the wealth of experience he shared.

Sundus (Y12 student), was so inspired and said ‘I wasn't sure if medicine was the right career choice because I have always loved speaking, sharing my thoughts and using my voice to make an impact. By attending Prof Ribbans’ talk, I learnt that it is still possible to become a doctor and enjoy what I love the most by going to conferences, appearing on the news, and travelling the world.’

Miss Kichenside, Assistant Headteacher said ‘Professor Ribbans had a huge impact on the students; they are still talking about how fantastic the visit was!’.

These valuable experiences serve to build the cultural capital of students and fuel aspiration.
