Catering for Careers

A day in the world of hospitality
Our recent careers visit to the Staybridge Hotel gave students an excellent insight into the exciting world of hospitality. The day began with a warm welcome from the hotel staff, followed by an informative seminar covering the hotel's operations, a range of career opportunities, and the salaries associated with different job roles.
Students enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the hotel's back offices, explored different types of accommodation, and learnt how seasonal demand affects room prices. They also took part in a fun pizza-making demonstration before enjoying lunch together.
One of the highlights of the visit was a practical housekeeping session, where students were shown the correct way to enter a guest room and then had the opportunity to practice the procedure themselves. It was a valuable hands-on learning experience that helped students develop their understanding of careers in the hospitality industry.
This visit supports Gatsby Benchmark 2 (Learning from Career and Labour Market Information) Students gained real insight into job roles, salary ranges, and how factors such as seasonality affect the hospitality industry, Benchmark 4 (Linking curriculum learning to careers) The visit connected real-world workplace skills — communication, professionalism, customer service to learning students are already doing in school. Benchmark 5 (Encounters with Employers and Employees) through direct engagement with hotel professionals, and Benchmark 6 (Experiences of Workplaces) by giving students first-hand experience of a real working environment.
Our thanks go to the staff of Staybridge who took us behind the scenes to give the students a real insight into the world of work in this sector.
